The Baha and Walid Bassatne Department of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Energy offers the degree of master of engineering in chemical engineering (thesis/ non-thesis).

Master of Engineering (ME)

The Baha and Walid Bassatne Department of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Energy fosters a community of scholars among its faculty members and graduate students, who have an interest in advancing knowledge and contributing to the profession.

Program Mission

The mission of Baha and Walid Bassatne Department of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Energy in MSFEA is to provide a stimulating and supportive environment for quality education; to prepare graduates for career opportunities in a rapidly changing world by fostering the development of professionalism, leadership qualities and ethical behavior; and to contribute to expanding the knowledge in chemical engineering and its related fields.

Program Objectives

The program will provide graduates with the necessary background and tools for handling challenges in various process industries, while emphasizing a strong technical foundation in advanced-level coursework and independent research. The program will therefore:

  • Complement the existing BS and BE programs in chemical engineering by providing advanced knowledge of fundamental subjects.
  • Supplement the research portfolio of AUB. 
  • Encourage industrial partnerships leading to research that supports the needs of the various process industries in Lebanon and the region. 
  • Provide the necessary resources to support research activities which will facilitate faculty retention and promotion.

Program Learning Outcomes

The program objectives are:

  • Analyze qualitative and/or quantitative research information, in creative projects related to their graduate program.
  • Analyze core concepts, theories and practices in different areas of study in their discipline.
  • Demonstrate scholarly communication skills in clear, detailed and well-structured scientific oral format consistent with high standards of their discipline.
  • Demonstrate scholarly communication skills in clear, detailed and well-structured scientific written format consistent with high standards of their discipline.
  • Apply professionalism and ethical conduct in their discipline.​

Admission Requirements

The ME thesis program is open to students with a bachelor of engineering (BE) in chemical engineering, bachelor of science (BS) in chemical engineering, or other related engineering disciplines. In addition, students with a bachelor of science (BS) in chemistry, biology, mathematics or physics, can also enroll in the ME program given they complete the necessary residency requirements.

The ME non-thesis program is open to students with a bachelor of engineering (BE) in chemical engineering, bachelor of science in chemical engineering, or other related engineering disciplines. In addition, students with a bachelor of science in chemistry, biology, mathematics or physics can also enroll in this program. 

Based on the student’s undergraduate major, the following additional admission requirements may apply: 

Engineering Majors

Students who have a bachelor of engineering or bachelor of science (in an engineering major) other than chemical engineering will also have to take the following courses: CHEN 417 and CHEN 470. 

Science Majors

Students who have a bachelor of science degree in chemistry, biology, mathematics or physics will be accepted as prospective graduate students in the ME program. 

It is the responsibility of these students to have completed the equivalent of both MATH 218 and MATH 251 prior to joining the program. 

If MATH 251 is not taken, students must take EECE 231/CMPS 200 first, then in the next term, the students have to register MATH 251 to pass graduate courses. 

Students will also have to pass the following courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 before joining the MS program: 

  • Required core chemical engineering courses: CHEN 311, CHEN 312, CHEN 314, CHEN 411 and CHEN 417. 
  • One of the following three courses is required: CHEN 351, CHEN 451, CHEN 470.​

Residency Requirements

A minimum of one calendar year of residence is required for graduation from this program. 

Master of Engineering (ME) Major: Chemical Engineering

Master’s Thesis (30 cr.)

Holders of a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Engineering 

The students should complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in total that could be divided between 21 credit hours of courses and a 9 credit-hour thesis on a full- or part-time basis. A minimum of one calendar year of residence is required for graduation from this program. 

Students who hold a bachelor of engineering in a major other than chemical engineering will be accepted as ME in chemical engineering and should take CHEN 417 and CHEN 470.

The required 30 credit hours of courses and thesis are distributed as follows: 

  • 3 credits of applied mathematics 
  • 6 credits of chemical engineering core required courses 
  • 6 credits of chemical engineering electives 
  • 6 credits of non-chemical engineering electives 
  • 9 credits of thesis work 
  • 0 credit of seminar (when offered) 
  • 0 credit of Thesis Proposal (CHEN 799T/TR)

Holders of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering

The students should complete a minimum of 46 credit hours in total divided between a minimum of 37 credit hours of courses and 9 credit hours of thesis work on a full- or part-time basis. A minimum of two calendar years of residence is required for graduation from this program. 

Students who hold a bachelor of science in an engineering major other than chemical engineering will be accepted as ME in chemical engineering and should take CHEN 417 and CHEN 470 on top of the program requirements.

The minimum required 46 credit hours of courses and thesis are distributed as follows: 

  • 3 credits of applied mathematics 
  • 12 credits of core required courses 
  • 13 credits of chemical engineering electives 
  • 9 credits of non-chemical engineering electives 
  • 9 credits of thesis work 
  • 0 credit of seminar (when offered) 
  • 0 credit of Thesis Proposal (CHEN 799T/TR)

Holders of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sciences

Students who have a bachelor of science degree in chemistry, biology, mathematics or physics will be accepted as prospective graduate students in the ME program. 

It is the responsibility of these students to have completed the equivalent of both MATH 218 and MATH 251 prior to joining the program. 

If MATH 251 is not taken, students must take EECE 231/CMPS 200 first, then in the next term, the students have to register MATH 251 to pass graduate courses. 

Students will also have to pass the following courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 before joining the ME program: 

  • Required core chemical engineering courses: CHEN 311, CHEN 312, CHEN 314, CHEN 411 and CHEN 417. 
  • One of the following three courses is required: CHEN 351, CHEN 451, CHEN 470.​

Master’s Non-Thesis (33 cr.) 

Holders of a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Engineering

Students must complete a minimum of 33 credit hours of courses on a full- or part-time basis. A minimum of one calendar year of residence is required for graduation from this program. 

Students who have a bachelor of engineering in a degree other than chemical engineering will be accepted as ME in chemical engineering and should take CHEN 417 and CHEN 470. 

The required 33 credit hours of courses and thesis are distributed as follows: 

  • 3 credits of applied mathematics 
  • 6 credits of chemical engineering core required courses 
  • 12 credits of chemical engineering electives 
  • 9 credits of non-chemical engineering electives 
  • 3 credits of Special Topics/ Project 
  • 0 credit of Seminar when offered

Holders of a Bachelor of Science Degree

The ME non-thesis program is open to students with a bachelor of science (BS) in chemical engineering or other related disciplines. Additionally, it is also open to students with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or physics who will be accepted as prospective graduate students. 

The students must complete a minimum of 46 credit hours of courses on a full- or part-time basis. A minimum of two calendar years of residence is required for graduation from this program. 

The minimum required 46 credit hours of courses and thesis are distributed as follows:

  • 3 credits of applied mathematics 
  • 12 credits of core required courses 
  • 16 credits of chemical engineering electives 
  • 12 credits of non-chemical engineering electives 
  • 3 credits of Special Topics/project 
  • 0 credit of Seminar when offered 
In addition to these 46 credit hours, students holding a bachelor of science in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or physics must fulfill the same pre-requisites listed under the ME (thesis option) to change their status from prospective to regular students.

Applied Mathematics Course

The math course or math-oriented course offered by other departments must be approved by the graduate adviser. Additional math courses may be counted as non-chemical engineering electives. Acceptable courses include but are not limited to: CIVE 710, MATH 350 / CMPS 350, MATH 351 / CMPS 351, CMPS 354, ENMG 604, MECH 630, MECH 663.

Core Required Courses

The following core courses are required for all master level students: CHEN 611, CHEN 617.
Students holding a bachelor of science degree in engineering or sciences must also complete the following core courses: CHEN 570, CHEN 571.

Special Courses and Thesis

Students should register for the Thesis Proposal (CHEN 799T) and pass it before being allowed to register for their thesis. If they fail CHEN 799T, they must register for CHEN 799TR and take the exam during the next term (excluding summer). Once completed, the students can register for CHEN 799, then CHEN 799 (A-E) in subsequent terms until the completion of their independent research. 

Except for CHEN 797, students are not allowed to take any of the listed special courses and Thesis more than once. The seminar course is compulsory and students should register it every term (excluding summer). 

Students must register for the following to complete their thesis requirements:  CHEN 799T/ 799TR, CHEN 799, CHEN 799 /B / C, CHEN 799D/E, CHEN 797.

Please note that students can only credit 600-level (or above) courses in the department.

Please note that students can only credit 600-level (or above) courses in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (or at an equivalent level in other faculties).
