The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to the degree of master of science (MS) in mathematics.
Under mathematics, students may choose between two tracks: a track in pure mathematics and a track in applied mathematics.
Mission Statement
The mission of the graduate program in mathematics is to provide graduate education through rigorous academic training and innovative research. Currently, MS tracks are offered in both pure and applied Mathematics. Each track combines a strong theoretical core with specialized elective study and a thesis project. The department is dedicated to mentoring students to become independent thinkers and problem-solvers, prepared for advanced careers in academia, industry, and research.
MS in Mathematics
Students who are admitted to one of the two MATH tracks, pure or applied, must complete the university requirements for graduate study in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences with at least 24 credits at the graduate level and a thesis. These 24 credits must include the following required core courses for both tracks: MATH 303, MATH 304, MATH 309, and MATH 341.
Students following the pure mathematics track are required to take at least one of MATH 306 or MATH 314 and complete the 24 credits by choosing any 3 elective courses offered in the department, totaling 9 credits, in addition to writing and defending a thesis in an area of pure mathematics.
Students following the applied mathematics track are required to take at least one of MATH 350 or MATH/STAT 338 and complete the 24 credits by choosing any 3 elective courses offered in the department, totaling 9 credits, in addition to writing and defending a thesis in an area of applied mathematics.
PhD in Mathematics
The PhD program in mathematics is dedicated to producing highly qualified and independent researchers capable of making original and significant contributions to mathematical sciences and of contributing to further developments through successful careers in academia or industry. The program supports the AUB mission of promoting excellence in research and education, participating in the advancement of knowledge through research and serving the people of the Middle East and beyond.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the PhD program is done on a competitive basis. To be eligible for admission, applicants must have an excellent academic record and must demonstrate exceptional motivation and ability to pursue research in mathematics and applied mathematics. The following items are required for an application:
- Degrees: A master of science (MS) degree in mathematics, applied mathematics or related fields from an institution recognized by AUB is required.
- A cumulative average of at least 3.7 or the standardized equivalent shown on the official transcript of the applicant.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- GRE General Test as per AUB requirements. Subject GRE is required as per the Mathematics Department requirements.
- For English, Readiness for University Studies in English (RUSE) as per AUB regulations.
- A statement of purpose.
- A recommendation for admission from the AUB Mathematics Department.
- A departmental committee may require an interview with the applicant before giving a recommendation.
Program Requirements
Students who are admitted to the program must complete 24 credits of graduate mathematics courses beyond the master’s degree. At most three credits out of these 24 credits can be tutorial courses. Students are required to complete 9 credits of graduate courses in their first term, 6 in their second term, 6 in their third term, and 3 in their fourth term.
The 24 credits of post-master’s graduate mathematics courses must include at least 9 credits of core courses taken from the following list: MATH 305 or MATH 312, MATH 306 or MATH 314, MATH 344, MATH 340, MATH 330, MATH 351.
Although these core courses must be completed by the fourth term, students are strongly encouraged to complete them by their second term.

MA or MS in Statistics (Frozen)
Students must complete the university requirements for graduate study in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, at least 24 credits at the graduate level and a thesis. At least 18 of the 24 credits must be taken in the department and must include MATH 303, STAT 331, STAT 332, STAT 333 and STAT 334. Students interested in taking courses outside the department may do so after obtaining approval from the department.
