Mission Statement
The Department of Computer Science at the American University of Beirut prepares students for advanced studies and professional careers in the dynamically changing world of computing and information technology. Our programs combine the theoretical foundations of computing with the practical knowledge of software development vital to industry, to provide broad and integrated curriculums.
The department offers a bachelor of science (BS) degree in computer science, designed to be completed typically in three years after the freshman year. It also offers a master of science (MS) program designed to provide advanced and specialized education in computing, offered in formats that meet the needs of both working professionals and full-time students.
The department has vigorous research programs in theoretical computer science networking and security, machine learning and data science, high-performance computing, data mining and information retrieval, and software engineering. Our faculty members are committed to contributing to the advancement of the field of computing through scholarly activities, in which our students play a vital role.
MS in Computer Science
In addition to the university requirements for graduate study in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, students must complete: (1) 21 credits of coursework and a 9-credit thesis (thesis option), (2) 27 credits of coursework and a 3-credit project (project option), or (3) 30 credits of coursework (course-based option). For all options, the courses are normally CMPS courses numbered 310 and above to be taken in coordination with the student’s adviser. Students may take up to 6 credits of coursework from the following list: EECE 631, EECE 635, EECE 621, EECE 623, EECE 625, EECE 626, EECE 653, EECE 657. Students must also satisfy a breadth requirement by taking at least 3 credits per area from three different areas of the following eight areas:
- Theory: CMPS 314, CMPS 315, CMPS 316, CMPS 317, EECE 631, EECE 635, or a special topics course in this area.
- Computer Architecture and Parallel Computing: CMPS 323, CMPS 324, EECE 621, EECE 623, EECE 625, EECE 626, or a special topics course in this area
- Programming Languages and Compilers: CMPS 332 or a special topics course in this area
- Systems and Networking: CMPS 342, CMPS 343, CMPS 345, EECE 653, EECE 657, or a special topics course in this area
- Computational Science: CMPS 350, CMPS 351, CMPS 354, CMPS 355, CMPS 358, CMPS 359, or a special topics course in this area
- Artificial Intelligence and Data Science: CMPS 364, CMPS 365, or a special topics course in this area
- Software Engineering: CMPS 371 or a special topics course in this area
