Overview

The Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for the Rula and Fuad Tamer Chair in Engineering Artificial Intelligence (AI). This prestigious endowed chair seeks an exceptional scholar or practitioner whose work will define how artificial intelligence reshapes engineering over the coming decades.

The appointment will be based in MSFEA, with a joint appointment in AUB's newly established School of Computing and Data Sciences, creating a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI research and education across one of the region's leading universities. Appointment will be at the rank of Professor or Professor of Practice. The preferred start date is September 2027.

Qualifications & Main Duties

We seek candidates with outstanding academic credentials and an established international reputation for scholarship or professional achievement at the intersection of artificial intelligence and engineered physical systems, including robotics and autonomous systems. Of particular interest are candidates whose work enables systems that sense, learn, reason, and act in real environments. We welcome applicants who develop novel AI methods motivated by engineering challenges as well as those who use state-of-the-art AI to achieve transformative advances in engineering.

The Chair will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education through innovative teaching, curriculum development, and mentorship, and will foster interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, computing, medicine, business, and the natural sciences. The appointee will also be expected to cultivate partnerships with industry, government, and international research organizations, helping position AUB as a leader in engineering AI.

Candidates pursuing appointment as Professor should hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in engineering or a closely related discipline and have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching and mentorship, externally funded research, and academic leadership. Candidates pursuing appointment as Professor of Practice should have a distinguished record of professional achievement and leadership in industry or another relevant sector, with demonstrated contributions to technological innovation and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to education, mentorship, and the intellectual life of the University.

The Bahaa and Walid Bassatne Department of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Energy (CHEN) of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions, preferably at the level of Assistant Professor.  Exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered.

Qualifications & Main Duties

The successful candidate must hold a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, and a doctoral degree in chemical engineering or a related field.  The candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, as part of the chemical engineering curriculum, and must demonstrate a strong track record or outstanding potential for establishing a robust research program.  Faculty members at AUB are required to sustain an active research agenda, publish research findings consistently, deliver a standard course load at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and engage in service duties with the faculty in the department, and across MSFEA and AUB.

Candidates with expertise in the general field of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Energy are invited to apply. The Department, however, is particularly interested in applicants with research interests in renewable and clean energy, energy storage, green and sustainable chemical process engineering, bioprocess engineering, and/or advanced materials and nanotechnology.

Tenure-Track Position in Architecture: Climate-Responsive and Sustainable Architecture - School of Architecture and Design​​

Overview

​The School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Architecture, with a focus on climate-responsive and sustainable architecture.  The position is open at the assistant or associate professor level, depending on qualifications and experience.

​​​​​​​​Qualifications & Main Duties​​

The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree; however, exceptional applicants with a master's degree in Architecture, Sustainable Design, or equivalent may also be considered. The candidate should demonstrate a proven track record of design excellence and a body of work (professional or academic) that foregrounds sustainability and climate responsiveness, as well as teaching experience in design studios and/or building technology and environmental systems. Additionally, the candidate must provide evidence of a research or creative agenda that addresses sustainability, climate-responsive design, material innovation, or environmental systems, along with the ability to secure research funding or develop funded projects.  The candidate should have experience working in climate-vulnerable or resource-constrained contexts and be familiar with environmental performance tools such as simulation software, LCA tools, or environmental analysis platforms. They should also demonstrate a record of interdisciplinary collaboration with fields such as engineering, urban planning, or environmental studies. Recognition through awards, grants, exhibitions, or peer-reviewed publications is also highly desirable.

We are seeking a scholar-practitioner whose teaching, research, and practice engage critically with the environmental challenges facing the built environment, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean and Global South. The successful candidate will contribute to the design studio sequence and offer courses related to sustainable building design, environmental systems, material ecologies, or climate adaptation.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainability that bridges design innovation with technical and contextual knowledge. This includes attention to passive design strategies, resource efficiency, climate justice, and the socio-ecological dimensions of architecture. Candidates whose work reflects an integrated approach to design, performance, and environmental ethics are especially encouraged to apply.  The successful candidate will lead or participate in research initiatives, pursue external funding, and contribute to regional and international collaborations focused on ecological design and climate adaptation.
