Overview

The School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice level to serve as Director of CIRCL (Center for Collaborative Design). This position advances a central strategic priority of SoAD: integrating human-centered design and design thinking across teaching, research, and professional practice. CIRCL promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across the University, positioning design as a transferable methodology that fosters creativity, systems thinking, and collaborative problem-solving among students from diverse fields.  The Director will provide strategic and academic leadership to establish CIRCL as AUB’s hub for human-centered design and interdisciplinary innovation, strengthening its institutional impact, regional engagement, and international visibility.

Qualifications & Main Duties

The successful candidate should hold a terminal degree in Design or a related field (M.Des, M.Arch, Ph.D., or equivalent professional distinction).  She/He should demonstrate leadership experience in academic, research, or design innovation environments, along with an established record of excellence in teaching, particularly in human-centered design, design research, innovation, or interdisciplinary studios. A strong portfolio of professional, creative, and/or applied scholarly work is expected, as well as evidence of successful collaboration with industry, public institutions, NGOs, or interdisciplinary academic teams. The candidate should also have experience in strategic planning, program development, and organizational leadership, and a proven record of contributing to curriculum development, including the creation of new academic tracks or programs.  The Director of CIRCL will guide the Center's vision, development, and integration within SoAD, the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and across AUB.

Key responsibilities of the candidate include developing and implementing short-, medium-, and long-term strategic plans for CIRCL, including the creation of new academic programs, courses, and partnerships. The role also involves expanding CIRCL as a cross-campus platform that connects design, engineering, business, public policy, health, and related disciplines, and supporting faculty across AUB in incorporating human-centered design methodologies into their teaching and research. The director will design and oversee undergraduate and graduate courses in human-centered design, design research, systems thinking, behavioral insights, and innovation methods, while also leading advanced studios, workshops, ideathons, hackathons, prototyping labs, and other collaborative learning initiatives. In addition, the position includes developing experiential, externally engaged course models in partnership with NGOs, public-sector institutions, startups, and private-sector organizations, and establishing and sustaining local, regional, and international partnerships that position CIRCL within global design and academic networks. As a Professor of Practice, the appointee will contribute primarily through teaching excellence, professional engagement, and leadership in applied design innovation. While traditional peer-reviewed research is not the primary expectation of this role, candidates should demonstrate sustained professional achievement and/or applied scholarly contributions in human-centered design and collaborative innovation.

The appointee will also contribute to SoAD's teaching mission by participating in design studios (including Basic Design), developing advanced coursework aligned with CIRCL's mission, and contributing to curriculum development—particularly in relation to emerging directions such as product design or interdisciplinary innovation.
