Lars Christie, Visiting Research Affiliate (Fall 2025-26—Fall 2027-28)

PhD in Philosophy, Oslo University, Norway, 2016
Lars Christie is a visiting scholar at the Department of Philosophy at AUB. During his stay, he will conduct a
research project on ethical priorities in humanitarian aid, drawing on cases from Lebanon and Syria. Developed with the contribution of Professor Bashshar Haydar, the project has a twofold focus. First, it examines the roles that justice and cost-effectiveness should play in the allocation of humanitarian aid. Second, it investigates when breaches of humanitarian principles may be morally permissible or required.
Lars Christie is an
associate professor at the Institute of Law, Philosophy, and International Studies at University of Inland Norway. Christie’s main area of research is moral philosophy, with particular focus on ethics of war and individual self-defense. More generally, he is interested in distributive justice, punishment, and desert. Before beginning his academic career, Christie worked as a Norwegian diplomat and as a Policy Director at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
