Welcome to the Department of Economics
The Department of Economics at the American University of Beirut is one of the largest in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Our mission is to provide students with rigorous training in economics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to produce high-quality research, and to contribute services to our discipline, the University, and communities in Lebanon and the wider region.
Our diverse faculty are committed to excellence in both teaching and research. Their expertise covers a wide range of fields including health economics, labor economics, financial economics, macroeconomics, development and political economics.
At the undergraduate level, the Department offers a
BA in Economics and a
minor in Economics for non-majors. At the graduate level, we offer an
MA in Economics and an
MA in Financial Economics. Faculty and students actively engage in a vibrant academic community through seminars, research activities, and faculty-student interactive events.

Dr. Simon Neaime won the best paper award during the closing session of the ERF 31st Annual Conference, under the Finance theme for the paper titled:“MENA Stock Markets Decoupling: Winners and Losers from the Wars in Ukraine and Middle East.” That same paper was subsequently published in the Research in International Business and Finance, Vol. 82, January 2026.
