    The Inaugural Philip K. Hitti Endowed Chair in Middle Eastern Studies

    The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration (PSPA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for the inaugural Philip K. Hitti Endowed Chair in Middle Eastern Studies, set to begin on August 15, 2025. This position may be offered as a visiting professorship or fellowship, available for a term or an academic year. 

    Established through a generous gift from the Friends of Philip K. Hitti in 2024, this prestigious Chair seeks a distinguished scholar with a strong record of academic excellence. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies or a related field and hold the rank of associate or full professor. 

    We welcome applicants who demonstrate a commitment to outstanding research, teaching, and intellectual engagement in Middle Eastern studies, with a particular focus on the region’s politics and history. 

    The successful candidate will: 
    ● Teach two courses per year (1/1) in alignment with the department’s curricular needs and the Chair’s mission.

    ​Department of Fine Arts and Art History: Tenure-track assistant professor in Choral Conducting

    The Department of Fine Arts and Art History (FAAH) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for the position of tenure-track assistant professor in Choral Conducting.

    The successful candidate will carry a dual role as conductor of the AUB choir and as the director of the minor degree in music currently offered by the department.

    The successful candidate will work to develop and guide the minor degree in Music towards a BA degree. Experience in curricular development and/or academic administration would be an asset. Contributions to service include collaborating with the Zaki Nassif Program for Music.

    In their role as director of the music program, the successful candidate will promote and develop a curricular emphasis on Arabic or other non-Western musical traditions with particular attention to global improvisational traditions and/or composition. In their position as choir conductor, the successful applicant will work with the university to raise funds and promote the formation of a high-quality and innovative choral ensemble.

    We seek a colleague who can offer introductory and intermediate courses in a range of areas (eg. history, theory), as well as advanced courses in areas of specialization. We particularly welcome candidates with experience arranging for and working with diverse small ensembles.

    Applicants must demonstrate evidence of teaching and research excellence. The applicant must hold a terminal degree in the field with a preference for doctorate holders. The language of instruction is English.

    Research Positions

    Facilities Spa​ce Coordinator/Academic Assistant

    1- Basic Functions:
    The position involves assessing space needs, coordinating allocations, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of physical spaces including classrooms, labs, offices, and shared facilities. The coordinator ensures space use aligns with safety, accessibility, and university policies and works closely with the Faculty’s GIS specialist to support data analysis and space visualization. The role requires excellent organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with various units, including facilities and maintenance teams.

    2- Duties Performed
    • Supports the FAS GIS Technologist/Specialist in all matters related to space planning and utilization within the Faculty.
    • Develops a comprehensive understanding of space policies, allocation procedures, and inventory management systems.
    • Assists in maintaining and updating records of space assignments, usage patterns, and occupancy levels.
    • Follows up on maintenance issues affecting the usability of physical space.
    • Ensures compliance with university safety, accessibility, and space management policies.
    • Contributes to the continuous improvement of internal procedures related to space and data management.
    • Assesses space needs of departments and academic units based on current and projected requirements.
    • Allocates space efficiently in alignment with institutional priorities.
    • Reviews and processes requests for space reservation, repurposing, or modifications.
    • Maintains a comprehensive inventory of offices, labs, classrooms, and other spaces, ensuring data accuracy and confidentiality.
    • Tracks changes in space assignments and generates regular space utilization reports for the Dean or relevant committees.
    • Collaborates with the FAS GIS Technologist/Specialist to map and analyze spatial data.
    • Supports the visualization of space use trends and future needs using GIS tools.
    • Assists in interpreting spatial data to inform planning and decision-making across the Faculty.
    • Ensures that space data is consistently organized, updated, and available for strategic use. Work Contacts

    3- Minimum Requirements Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Facilities Management, Geography, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.

    4- Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in space planning, facilities coordination, or a similar administrative role, preferably within an academic or institutional environment.

    5- Technical Skills:
    • Familiarity with space management principles and inventory tracking systems.
    • Familiarity with AutoCAD for drafting and updating floor plans and space layouts.
    • Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS); experience with ArcGIS or similar tools is preferred.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

    6- Other Competencies:
    • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
    • Attention to detail and accuracy in data and reporting.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and collaborate across teams.

    Position Overview
    We are seeking a highly organized, proactive, and personable Partnerships and Administrative Coordinator to be a cornerstone of the RICH team. The ideal candidate will be the central point for all administrative functions and will play a crucial role in building and maintaining relationships with our key stakeholders. This position is essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the Hub and supporting its mission to connect research with societal impact.

    Key Responsibilities
    Administrative & Operational Support:
    • Manage the day-to-day administrative operations of the Hub, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and handling correspondence.
    • Prepare and format documents, including reports, meeting agendas, minutes, and presentations for internal and external use.
    • Establish and maintain an organized filing system for projects, partnership agreements, and official documentation.
    • Provide logistical support for RICH-hosted events, workshops, and seminars, including venue coordination, invitations, and material preparation.
    • Assist in tracking project milestones and deliverables, liaising with researchers and partners to ensure timely updates.

    Stakeholder Relations & Communication:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries from potential partners, community members, and other stakeholders, ensuring a professional and timely response.
    • Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of all public and private sector partners, community contacts, and collaborators.
    • Proactively communicate with stakeholders to build and nurture strong, lasting relationships. • Coordinate and schedule meetings between RICH leadership and external partners, preparing necessary briefing materials beforehand.
    • Assist in drafting and disseminating communications, such as newsletters, updates, and announcements, to our network.
    • Support the RICH leadership in outreach activities aimed at identifying and engaging new potential partners.

    Qualifications and Skills Required:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field.
    • A minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in an administrative, project coordination, or stakeholder relations role.
    • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet deadlines.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal), with a talent for building rapport and fostering professional relationships.
    • High level of proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
    • Fluency in both English and Arabic is essential.
    • A proactive and self-motivated attitude, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
    Desirable:
    • Experience working in a university, research institution, or non-profit environment.
    • Experience in event coordination

    Post-doctoral Position in Development Studies

    The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Media Studies (SOAM) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellow in Development Studies, beginning August 15, 2025. The initial appointment is for one academic year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, subject to university approval and funding availability. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

    This position is part of the department’s Critical Approaches to Development in the MENA project and contributes to AUB’s growing emphasis on interdisciplinary and regionally grounded approaches to development studies. 

    We seek applicants who hold a PhD in Development Studies or a related discipline (such as Political Economy, Sociology, Anthropology, or Geography), awarded between 2020 and 2025. The successful candidate will have an active research agenda in critical development studies, with a regional focus on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) strongly preferred. 

    The successful candidate will: 

    • Contribute to the Critical Approaches to Development in the MENA project through original research, publication, and participation in related academic activities. 

    • Participate in department and university programming related to development studies and interdisciplinary research in the region. 

    • Contribute to a collegial and dynamic department that values professionalism and collaboration. 

    • Potentially teach one course per semester within AUB’s newly launched Diploma in Development Studies.

We seek a scholar who will advance knowledge on the historical, intellectual, cultural, and socio-economic connections between these two critical regions.

    Position Overview:
    The position encourages research that is both comparative and interdisciplinary, spanning the fields of history, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Cultural Studies, and Womens Studies among others. The successful candidate will have a joint appointment at the Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) and the Department of History and Archaeology. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research addresses one or more of the following areas: diasporas/migration/refugee studies, cultural exchange and representation, comparative social and religious movements, political activism among others. Candidates whose projects rely on the archival materials and collections of the AUB Jafet Library are particularly enc​ouraged to apply.

    • Duration: 1 year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding.
