  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Mission and Vision

Approved by the Board of Trustees as AUB's 8th faculty in June 2024, the new School of Computing and Data Sciences (SCDS) shall reflect as it advances the university's excellence in teaching and learning, research and innovation, medical care, and institutional effectiveness. It shall further reinforce AUB's historic role in the region as a place that upholds freedom of inquiry and thought at the service of knowledge production and human advancement.

SCDS is centered on the sciences of computing and data, artificial intelligence, and their applications. The School brings together AUB's longstanding interdisciplinary expertise to advance teaching, research, innovation, and the responsible use of computational and data-driven technologies.

Mission

At the School of Computing and Data Sciences, we harness data, computation and critical inquiry to amplify intelligence and advance insights across natural and social realms. We serve as both observatory and engine—curating and analyzing data across scales, from subatomic to cosmological, from individual lives to networked societies. We graduate students, and fuel collaborative research with the knowledge, skills and resources to interrogate data deeply, build responsible algorithms, and contribute ethically to scientific, environmental, and societal challenges especially those shaping the Mediterranean and the Global South.

Vision

SCDS takes a principled and forward-looking approach to artificial intelligence and data, recognizing both their technical depth and their social, ethical, economic, and philosophical implications. The School seeks to equip students and researchers with the knowledge, tools, and skills to understand data, develop responsible algorithms, and address complex problems across disciplines.

Its vision brings together mathematical and computational foundations with data-driven intelligent systems and applications across fields including medicine, earth sciences, business, Arabic natural language processing, social sciences, music and the arts, and other domains. Through interdisciplinary academic programs, research and innovation initiatives, and computational resources, SCDS aims to contribute to the development of new knowledge and responsible technological solutions.
