2008 Chemistry Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie delivered the 35th mentoring talk at AUB entitled, “The Continuing Need for Useless Knowledge" on Jan 27, 2026 via WebEx. This mentoring talk was organized in partnership with the prestigious Angewandte Chemie.
Nobel Laureate Chalfie delivered a profoundly inspiring mentoring talk on “Useless Knowledge", reminding us that the ideas with no immediate payoff are often the ones that lead to discoveries that change science, improve health, and shape our understanding of the world. He stressed that many of the advances we rely on today began with simple questions. More than a lecture, the talk was a reminder that progress is often slow, unexpected, and built step by step driven by the freedom to explore and to ask.
