Week 1: Foundations, Fieldwork, and Lab Analysis
Day 1 | Monday, July 6, 2026
- Introduction & Registration: Welcome session and student onboarding.
- Department & Program Overview: Introducing the department's vision and goals.
- What do Earth Scientists Do?: An insightful look into careers and research in Earth Sciences.
- Project Introduction: Establishing the framework, scope, and strategy for the program's core project.
- Safety Training: Essential lab and field safety protocols.
Day 2 | Tuesday, July 7, 2026
- Field Visit 1 (GeoTrail): Outdoor field exploration and hands-on learning.
- Sample Collection: Gathering and identifying various rock samples.
- Soil Mechanics: Understanding the properties and roles of clays and soils.
- Core Lab Analytics: Introduction to SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and XRD (X-ray Diffraction).
- Thin Section Preparation: Learning the precise art of preparing rock samples for microscopy.
- Microscopic Evaluation: Analyzing sample texture, chemistry, mineralogy, and porosity.
- Field Visit 2 (Jeita Grotto): Field excursion focused on hydrogeology, speleology, and karst systems.
Day 5 | Friday, July 10, 2026
- Core Lab (Hydrochemistry & Microbiology):
- Ion Chromatography (IC): Analyzing major cations and anions in water samples.
- Titration: Determining chemical concentrations through volumetric analysis.
- Bacterial Analysis: Introducing microbiological testing and water quality assessment.
Week 2: Modeling, Mentorship, and Final Presentations
Day 6 | Monday, July 13, 2026
- Modeling and Coding: Introduction to data analysis, environmental modeling, and computational tools in Earth Sciences.
Days 7, 8, & 9 | Tuesday, July 14 – Thursday, July 16, 2026
- Academic Shadowing & Mentorship: Working closely with researchers and faculty.
- Scientific Report Writing: Compiling, analyzing, and structuring the collected data into a professional report.
- Presentation Preparation: Designing visual slides and refining public speaking skills for the final day.
Day 10 | Friday, July 17, 2026
- Final Presentations: Students present their project outcomes and scientific findings.
- Certificate Distribution: Closing ceremony and official recognition of program completion.
