Certificate and Class Chart

The chart below lists the types of school certificates and the corresponding university classes to which holders may be admitted. In all cases, applicants must:
  • Take the SAT (including Mathematical Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections) by the stated deadline, and
  • Meet the Readiness for University Studies in English (RUSE) requirement.

School Certificate University Class Eligibility

High School Diploma

Based on at least twelve years of schooling, starting with Elementary I Class
Students who achieve high grades on certain College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations may apply for freshman course credit in those subjects (refer to the Freshman Program section in FAS)

CEGEP – 1 yearFreshman
CEGEP – 2 years + DECSophomore

Government Secondary Certificates

Based on at least twelve years of schooling, starting with Elementary I Class

Students need to verify with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) whether their secondary certificate is officially recognized as equivalent to the Lebanese Baccalaureate.

This determination is required to confirm eligibility for freshman admission or sophomore admission.

Students who successfully complete the freshman class must obtain the Freshman Equivalence from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE). They may then be promoted to the sophomore class.

Students admitted to the freshman class are strongly encouraged to consult with their academic advisers to become familiar with the admission requirements for the majors offered by the various faculties/schools of the university, which are described in detail in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences section of this catalogue.

Government Secondary Certificates (Literary or Scientific), including the German Abitur and the Diplôme D’ Études Collégiales (DEC) based on two years of the CEGEP program, the French Baccalaureate, the General Certificate of Education (GCE), and the International Baccalaureate (IB).

  1. Government Secondary School Certificates (including the Lebanese Baccalaureate – General Sciences and Life Sciences) generally qualify the holder for admission to majors in the sophomore class.
  2. Government Secondary School Certificates (including the Lebanese Baccalaureate – Literature and Humanities) may require the holder to complete additional courses if applying to majors where science or mathematics is required.
  3. International Baccalaureate (IB), French Baccalaureate (FB), and General Certificate of Education (GCE) Requirements
The table below shows the specific subjects and requirements that students must complete in the International Baccalaureate (IB), French Baccalaureate (FB), or General Certificate of Education (GCE) to qualify for direct admission to certain majors at AUB without needing any remedial courses.
Students who have not completed the required subjects for their intended major may still be admitted. However, they will need to take additional remedial courses at AUB, typically during their first and second terms.
