Sustainability is one of the foundational pillars of AUB's long-term strategy and commitment. Teaching, research, and practices related to sustainability are embedded within the institution's core culture and beliefs. Co-leading on sustainability at AUB as part of the
VITAL 2030 strategic vision are the Office of the Vice President for Administration, from the administrative side, and the Office of the Provost, from the academic side.
President Fadlo R. Khuri announced on April 24, 2024 the formation of the AUB Sustainability Committee. "The committee's mandate is to develop a long-term sustainability strategy for AUB with objectives, targets, timelines, and budget allocations. In addition, the committee will provide oversight for the assessment of the university's sustainability culture, expand the integration of sustainability into the core functions of the university, ensure the accuracy and transparency of reporting, and work on relevant policies, both existing and new."
The university has made a public commitment to sustainability by joining the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). The network promotes practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by mobilizing global scientific and technological expertise through universities, research centers, and other knowledge-based institutions.
In the
Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021, a pioneering global ranking that assesses the social and economic impact of universities based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), AUB was ranked number 87 among worldwide universities due to its remarkable effort and work on the SDGs. Moreover, the American University of Beirut was ranked in 2022 first in Lebanon and 138th in the world out of 1,183 universities, in this year's University of Indonesia GreenMetric World University Rankings, an annual publication ranking universities based on green campuses and environmental sustainability. Despite all the challenges faced in Lebanon, AUB took a leap forward and ranked in the 13th percentile of most sustainable universities based on a multi-criteria analysis related to six broad categories: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, and research and education.
