Supporting and promoting basic research is a central part of AUB’s academic mission.
Hence, Periodic Paid Research Leave is intended to provide associate and full professors with release time to concentrate on research at critical points in their careers. As such, it is an investment by AUB in the excellence of its faculty. Assistant professors are eligible to apply and benefit from the Junior Faculty Research Leave.
- Junior Faculty Paid Research Leave | Assistant Professors
- Leave duration: one semester in the rank
- Eligibility, application procedure, approval process, research travel allowance, salary and benefits during the leave, reporting and service requirements after the leave, as per the guidelines on the Office of the Provost website.
- Periodic Paid Research Leave | Associate Professors and Professors
- Leave duration: "AUB may, at its discretion, grant to any regular full professors, or associate professors at specific points in their careers with the university periodic paid research leave of one semester or, exceptionally, of one year"
"A faculty member (associate or full professor) may apply for one semester of paid research leave after three years of active service at the University, or for a year of paid research leave after six years of active service at the University. If a faculty member is granted one semester of paid research leave, he/she may apply for an additional semester of paid research leave after an additional three years of active service, or for a year of paid research leave after an additional six years of active service. A faculty member who is granted a year of paid research leave may apply for an additional semester of paid research leave after an additional three years of service, or for a year of paid research leave after an additional six years of service. In granting such leaves, the University will take into account the faculty member's research record and potential."

Application Materials: Apply online. The form must be submitted by the faculty member requesting a paid research leave. Please upload in PDF: 1. Description of expected financial support from sources other than AUB, where applicable; 2. Description of planned activities during the proposed leave; 3. Detailed research proposal; 4. CV; 5. Correspondence from hosting institution, where applicable; 6. Details concerning requested research travel allowance from AUB, where applicable.
The request will be channeled to the department chair who will be notified and requested to upload, to a designated folder, the departmental meeting minutes and numerical vote on the leave request, as well as the chair's separate recommendation on the request including a note on how the department would manage to cover the faculty member’s duties during their proposed leave.
