Request Approval of a Jointly-taught Course Guidelines + Forms

Jointly-taught courses are defined as courses co-taught by two FAS faculty members from distinct FAS departments, emphasizing active and inquiry-based learning over traditional lectures. Jointly-taught courses require full-time presence/participation of involved faculty members. Both faculty members will be assigned full teaching load credit as identified on banner, provided that both faculty members are present in class for all lectures and discussions, have assigned office hours depending on course credits, and are involved in student evaluation.

Jointly-taught courses require FAS Undergraduate Curriculum Committee/Graduate Studies Committee approval. A request for approval of a jointly-taught course must be submitted, with pertinent justification, by each of the chairs of the concerned departments on behalf of the participating faculty member within their unit.

Application materials: Apply online. Please upload in PDF: 1. Syllabus approved by the chairs of both concerned departments, in line with the FAS Syllabi Template; 2. Justification submitted by the two faculty members requesting approval of a jointly-taught course, detailing the benefit of delivering the course in joint mode and specifying the input of each participating faculty member; and 3. Chair's recommendation concerning the request, including a statement on the basis for cross-listing the course in more than one department.
