Overview
South Lebanon's agricultural sector was hit massively by the war on Lebanon in 2024. The level of degradation of agricultural lands leaves farmers with the challenge of maintaining their livelihoods and the threat of ongoing aggression heavily disrupts the capacity to access essential resources and cultivate the land. Olive trees and olive oil production were particularly affected.
This project aims to identify the specific recovery needs of Lebanon's agricultural sector in the post-conflict period, with an emphasis on the olive oil industry. By engaging stakeholders, including farmers, local authorities, NGOs, and policymakers, the study will help fill the knowledge gaps in understanding how best to restore Lebanon's agricultural assets while preserving its cultural heritage.

The Inter-University Seed Grant (IUSG), funded by IDRC through AUB, supports collaboration between AUB and MENA-region universities on conflict recovery, including environmental, healthcare, and agricultural studies.
Methods
The study adopts a qualitative approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of post-conflict recovery in the agricultural sector of Southern Lebanon and Palestine, synthesizing desk review and qualitative findings. First, a thorough desk review was conducted to understand the current context of the agricultural sector of South Lebanon and Palestine. The findings were then validated through FGDs and stakeholder interviews, including academics, civil society organizations, and cooperatives.
