AUB graduate students and alumni are invited to submit proposals for funding to support exploration and publication of findings from our university’s archives that are specifically related to American Studies. The funding aims to provide financial stimulus directly to the applicant or via employment of research assistance to use the materials held in AUB Libraries’ collections towards founding new research, public-facing knowledge-sharing, and methodological or theoretical approaches in American Studies.
Eligibility: AUB graduate students and alumni
Budget: Up to $3,000
Application materials: Apply online (form will open for submissions in July 2025). Please upload in a single PDF file: 1. Proposal including abstract (no more than 200 words), an outline of the applicant's research plans, detailed description of the proposed project and justification of topic in relation to applicant's interests and relevance for CASAR's mission with an overview of the archives (no more than 1000 words), budget and budget narrative (indicating the anticipated use of the requested funds); and 2. Applicant’s CV.
In preparing their proposal, applicants are requested to address the following questions from the committee, towards assessment of the proposal’s alignment with CASAR’s mission:
1. How can the proposed project help us (the AUB community) imagine what American Studies are?
2. What sorts of conversations does the proposed project hope to generate, and with whom (i.e. with teachers, students, or other constituents)?
3. How can the proposed project help construct a bilateral dialogue between AUB and American Studies practiced elsewhere?
4. What implications does the proposed project seek for the broader AUB community? Can it foster a symmetrical structure between the proposed topic of study and the targeted audience?
5. In what ways can people without a background in American Studies (students or community members) be included in the unfolding of the proposed project?
Outcomes for CASAR: Grantees should present their research focus/intervention in short segments of no more than 2-3 minutes. These segments will be uploaded on the CASAR website.
