The Advancing Research Enabling Communities Center (AREC), located in Haoush Sneid in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, is a 100-hectare agricultural research, teaching, and training facility of the American University of Beirut. Situated approximately 80 kilometers from Beirut, 25 kilometers northeast of Zahle, and 14 kilometers southwest of Baalbek, AREC provides a unique setting for experiential learning, applied research, training, and community engagement.
The Center brings together a wide range of academic, research, agricultural, residential, and support facilities. These include a research farm, classrooms and laboratories, an agricultural library, Seed Bank, weather station, livestock and crop production facilities, agricultural machinery and workshops, cold-storage facilities, student dormitories and guest accommodations, a cafeteria, clinic, and recreational and sports facilities.
AREC’s working farm provides students with hands-on experience across different areas of agriculture while supporting faculty research, field experimentation, demonstrations, and training. Its extensive facilities and quiet rural setting also make the Center well suited for workshops, seminars, retreats, and other academic and community activities.
