The American University of Beirut (AUB) climbed 29 places in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026, advancing from 205th last year to 176th globally. This leap comes despite an increase of 12 percent in the number of ranked institutions worldwide over the past year, from 1,779 to 2,002. The ranking evaluates the social and environmental impact of universities, highlighting demonstrated commitment to sustainability through research and actions that address issues across the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
AUB's leadership in sustainability has placed it first in the QS World University Rankings (WUR) for the Arab region out of 145 institutions, 2nd in Western Asia out of 169 institutions, and 18th in Asia out of 815 institutions, showcasing the university's leadership in sustainability. AUB's performance also reflects its strategic vision to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the UN SDGs, by mobilizing global scientific and technological expertise through universities, research centers, and other knowledge-based institutions.
The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, now in its fourth edition, assesses SDG goals organized within three categories: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance (ESG). The ranking is based on approximately 52 indicators grouped into nine lenses, or groups of related metrics, used to measure a university's performance within the categories.
AUB's strongest category is Environmental Impact, where it ranks 136th worldwide and 1st in Western Asia. With an approach to promote excellence in research, education, and campus initiatives, AUB continues to contribute to minimizing environmental impact and creating a more sustainable world.
Also noteworthy is AUB's performance globally in Knowledge Exchange (78th), Environmental Sustainability (86th), and Environmental Education (152nd), ranking among the top institutions in Western Asia.
AUB's high score in Knowledge Exchange reflects its commitment to collaborative research partnerships, sharing expertise, and advancing educational growth. These efforts elevate academic standards globally and foster the exchange of resources, knowledge, and skills. AUB's regional expertise and public policy initiatives further strengthen its community outreach and positive impact.
The QS WUR ranking is the first primary ranking provider to incorporate sustainability into its comprehensive ranking methodology. The resulting scores reflect AUB's ongoing efforts to address global challenges and its commitment not only to a green campus and neighborhood, but to a more sustainable region and world. Through research, teaching, initiatives, and operations, AUB serves as a reference model in ESG impact for its community and other institutions alike.
