The American University of Beirut (AUB) welcomed 50 new faculty members, joining from leading institutions across North America, Europe, the GCC, and the Middle East, bringing diverse academic backgrounds and international experience. To ease their transition and foster a sense of belonging, the Office of the Provost hosted a two-part New Faculty Orientation.
This year's incoming faculty members span various academic tracks, including tenure-track (15), clinical (25), non-tenure-track (7), and visiting (3) roles. The cohort includes 37 men and 13 women who will contribute across the university's faculties and disciplines, with the largest number joining the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.
The first part of the orientation took place in the scenic village of Mechmech, Byblos, offering a nature-based setting for introductions and informal networking. New faculty were introduced to AUB leadership, including the provost and deans of the various faculties and schools. The program included breakout discussions, a shared meal, and a tour. The day's informal atmosphere encouraged collegiality and sparked meaningful dialogue across disciplines.
“This year's New Faculty Orientation was designed around the theme of connection—connection with one another, with our community, and with nature," said Associate Provost Fida Afiouni. “Hosting the first day outdoors created a space for dialogue, reflection, and team-building in a setting that fostered openness and collaboration. The energy and spirit of the day set a welcoming tone for our new colleagues as they embark on their journey at AUB."
The second part of the orientation was held on campus at West Hall. It offered detailed insights into the university's academic and administrative structure, and provided a comprehensive overview of university resources, faculty benefits, policies, and teaching and research support systems.
The day concluded with tours of the Jafet Library and university sports facilities, followed by a well-being activity and a classical music concert at Assembly Hall.
“Welcoming our new faculty is one of the most important moments of the academic year at AUB," noted Provost Zaher Dawy. “We invite them to be daring, creative, and innovative in their teaching, research, and service—just as Gaudí showed us that true innovation comes from stepping outside the familiar field and imagining boldly."
Through its orientation program and year-round support structures, AUB demonstrates its commitment to helping new faculty integrate into its academic community, build meaningful connections, and thrive in their teaching, research, and service.
