In this iteration of Open Walls: The AUB Art Collection (Chapter 3), we are featuring three new art institutions: the Saloua Raouda Choucair Foundation, the Archaeological Museum of the American University of Beirut, and the Kamal A. Shair Central Research Science Laboratory at AUB. This exhibition continues to display artworks from the permanent collection of the American University of Beirut (AUB), entering a dialogue with pieces from other collections and forging relationships with other institutions. The project highlights the importance of cooperation among Beiruti and regional institutions engaged in the study of art.
For the third chapter of this exhibition, the wall dedicated to the Saloua Raouda Choucair Foundation was curated by our MA student in Art History and Curating, Marwa Saad, with assistance from fellow master's student Ahmad Abu Zayyad. The Foundation presents Choucair's series titled Tensions.
The Archaeological Museum of AUB, one of the oldest museums in Asia, invited the Lebanese artist Joanne Aoun to explore the relationship between archaeology and the present day.
Lastly, the Kamal A. Shair Central Research Science Laboratory (CRSL) at AUB accepted the invitation from AUB Art Galleries to collaborate. The laboratory conducted a chemical analysis of the artworks on display, utilizing an Elemental Analyzer—a scanner acquired by the AUB Faculty of Arts and Sciences in partnership with the Beirut Museum of Arts (BEMA). This analysis transforms art into data, bringing art and science together.
