  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Said Samih Darwazah

A trustee since 2025, Said Samih Darwazah is the Executive Chairman of Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC, a FTSE100-listed global company. He is the Chairman of Royal Jordanian Airlines, the national carrier of Jordan since 2016, and also serves as the vice chairman of Capital Bank Jordan. Mr. Darwazah is the chairman of the Queen Rania Foundation, focusing on youth empowerment through education and ICT and has founded the Health Care Accreditation Council in Jordan to improve healthcare standards in the MENA region. He previously served as Minister of Health for Jordan (2003–2006), board member of the Central Bank of Jordan (2007–2021), Chairman of Jordan University of Science and technology 'JUST' (2012-2016), board member of AUB (2011-2020), Babson College (2016–2019), and INSEAD (2018–2025). Mr. Darwazah holds an Industrial Engineering degree from Purdue University ('80) and an MBA from INSEAD ('84).
